Jubilee Terrace (1950s) Bedroom
The bedroom was my first attempt at wall papering. I decided to have picture rails which I made out of
stripwood and painted brown to match the skirting boards and door frames. The wall paper was quite thick so it was easy to hang with little
stretching. The blue and pink pattern I felt was appropriate if a little old-fashioned.
I hope that the light coloured furniture relieves the overall sombre tones in the room.
The stairs are completely brown on this side of the house and the stair carpet is laid, in the manner of
the times, leaving a strip of wood showing on either side.
This bedroom is quite an austere room with its cold linoleum floor and carpet square and rug.
To save money on fuel bedrooms were often unheated and so the stone hot water bottle and
electric fire were very necessary items. We can imagine the frost on the inside of the windows
on a cold winter morning!
