Edwardian House (1930s) Dining Room
After feeling
that the lincrusta was very effective in the Hall I was very keen to repeat the experience in the Dining Room.
This time, for reasons of economy, I decided to make my own by painting a suitably textured blown vinyl wallpaper
with a satin finish chocolate coloured paint. After fixing the skirting boards and rather sombre wallpaper
it was then just a matter of pasting the "lincrusta" on the lower part of the walls above the skirtings and finishing
it off with a dado rail.
I am not very keen on fabrics in Dolls Houses as I believe they are difficult to scale down successfully and as a result
often look too bulky. Curtains are, therefore, a problem! I have experimented in the Dining Room by using a heavy craft paper
which, I feel, resembles crushed velvet. I have to say that the result looks more effective in reality when light levels are lower than
in flash photography where the resulting pictures can often be "too revealing"!
I wanted this room to reflect the older "Edwardian" styling of the house with stained real wood flooring and
the original fireplace contrasting with its more modern (1930's) tiled counterpart in the Lounge.
Then, after purchasing a rather magnificent wooden desk and chair, I decided to make an area in the Dining Room into an office with ledgers and typewriter. Perhaps the owner
of the house has his own business?
To personalise the room I have placed a camera and tripod near the desk with a Photograph Album and some loose photos lying on the bookcase.
On the table is a finished wooden jigsaw puzzle, whilst on the armchair is an Edgar Wallace thriller and by the Bakelite wireless on the side table are copies of the "Radio Times" and "Practical Wireless".
On the wall above the radio is a well-thumbed 1936 calendar.
