Jubilee Terrace (1950s) Kitchenette

The kitchen area is rather sparse and utilitarian with a sink on bricks, a wooden plate rack, a hot water geyser on the wall and a rather home-made looking painted kitchen unit. There are not many labour-saving devices in this home! Practical black and white wall tiles and linoleum on the floor complete the picture.

In the dining area the space saving gate-legged table sits on a wooden floor covered by a carpet square; a much cheaper alternative to a fitted carpet. However, on the wall above the mantelpiece is a modern octagonal shaped mirror whilst at the bottom of the stairs there is a coat rack inspired by the new interest in science and the atom. Such reasonably priced items were often a first venture for many households into the new radical designs of the decade often referred to as the "Atomic Age". Many of these new designs were showcased at the 1951 "Festival of Britain" and a copy of the guidebook to that Festival is lying on top of the bureau.

Finally, as a stamp collector, I have personalised the room by having an open stamp album, stamp catalogue and a pair of tweezers lying on the desk area of the bureau.
