Neurofeedback Therapy
Neurofeedback Therapy is a drug free technique to improve the way your brain works. It is based on operant conditioning; patients are taught how to inhibit certain brain wave frequencies and increase other brain wave frequencies. The result is a change in the physical, emotional and cognitive states, often without conscious awareness. It is used to treat a variety of conditions, including anxiety, ADHD, insomnia, concussion, and memory loss with aging. It has also been shown to enhance focus and performance in athletes.
During neurofeedback training, electrodes are attached to the scalp and your brainwaves are monitored. Your brainwaves are displayed on a computer screen and when your brain produces favorable brainwaves, the screen will stay bright; however, when you produce less desirable brain waves, the screen will become dimmer. This feedback is important, as it allows you to practice and learn to control your brainwaves. As you learn to control these brain wave patterns, your symptoms will decrease and your overall functioning will improve.
In neurofeedback training, the goal is to increase your dominant faster brainwaves, essential for concentration, follow through, and basic learning functions. Studies show that consistent training results in improved performance, better grades, and decreased impulsivity, hyperactivity, and restlessness.
A neurofeedback treatment session is a comfortable experience for most. The patient lies motionless with their eyes closed while the electrodes on the head are capturing and monitoring brain activity. Neurofeedback is also used to address a wide range of other conditions, such as insomnia, fibromyalgia, and restless leg syndrome.
To perform neurofeedback, we first conduct a quantitative EEG (QEEG). This is a non-invasive procedure that consists of recording and measuring your brainwaves while you perform a task. The data is then recorded and sent to the computer for analysis. We are then able to see how your brain is functioning and identify areas that need work.
Our therapists have extensive training and certification in the field of Neurofeedback Therapy. They will review your QEEG maps and determine if neurofeedback is the right treatment for you. If it is, they will help you understand the process and make suggestions on how to train.
